ampair 600 - Overview

The Ampair 600 (watt) is the latest generation micro wind turbine from long established UK company Ampair. Comprising of a rotor diameter of 1.7 metres, it’s especially designed to meet the demand from individual householders for a renewable energy source, don't be put off by it's size... this is a serious bit of kit!

MCS - Ampair

The Ampair 600  incorporates , PowerFurlâ„¢ a system first seen on  the Ampair 300 which controls the turbine  in high winds, reducing noise and mounting system loads. The turbine  is available in two versions depending on whether the need is for high capacity 24/48V battery charging or for 230V domestic grid connection. Like all Ampair wind turbines products, the 600 is built to a very high specification, incorporating " full marine grade" specifications to cope with climates found in the UK and Ireland .

Mounting options

The Ampair 600 can be mounted on a free-standing mast, or on a wall bracket. The Ampair mountings include anti-vibration devices. This is because just as a flag flapping in the wind causes the flagpole to vibrate, so a working turbine also creates vibrations that if not eliminated could damage a building.

Installation

Installation is not a complicated process, but neither is it an easy DIY task. We can arrange our authorised experts to do the installation for you. Or you could of course make your own arrangements. Please note that the approximate total installed weight of the Ampair 600 is 16 kgs. for the turbine head, plus the weight of the mounting system.

Please note: To qualify for renewable generation tariffs, it is advised that all Ampair 230v grid tied wind turbines, be installed by the appropriate qualified MCS installers.

What Version should I choose?

  • Ampair 600- Battery
  • Ampair 600- Grid Connect

The Ampair 600-24 and Ampair 600-48 are designed for charging high capacity DC battery banks, typically 800Ah or more. The correct wind turbine and regulator must be purchased at the outset - either the 24V version or the 48V version - as it is not possible to change the voltage at a later date. The wind turbine must be installed in conjunction with the Ampair 600 regulator which includes the regulator itself plus the dump load; the fuses; the rectifier; the stop switch; and heatsinks.

Loads can be either 24V or 48V DC equipment or a stand alone sine wave inverter can be used to power 115V or 230V equipment.

Battery charging situations are typical in yachts, remote homes, and scientific monitoring stations. In many of these the wind turbine may be the only source of power.

The Ampair 600-230 is designed for connecting to 230V 50Hz grid systems operated by public utilities. It is ordinarily connected on the client's side of the electrical utility supply meter and is ideally connected into the consumer unit (fuse board). Electricity generated by the wind turbine is then used in preference to electricity supplied the public utility. If more electricity is required by the client then extra supply comes in from the utility, and if more is generated than is consumed on site then the surplus is exported to the utility.

In a system that is connected to an AC grid such as is normally the case with a domestic residence, or commercial property the micro wind system is intended to reduce the amount of energy that is drawn from the grid. Many clients ideal is that the amount of energy that is generated from renewable sources such as the wind should approximately match the base load of the site so that energy from the electricity grid is only called upon to supplement the locally generated energy during periods of peak demand. These systems are often called "grid-tied" or "grid-connected" and the components of a micro wind energy generating system in these circumstances are the microwind turbine itself; the mounting system; some system protection (such as fuses); any metering required; and a grid tied inverter.

The Ampair 600-230 must be installed in conjunction with the Ampair interconnect set which includes a G83 sine wave inverter; stop switch; overloads; power conditioning; and isolation.
